Discover the Wulai Trolley Experience
Wulai, nestled in the mountainous region of New Taipei City, Taiwan, is celebrated for its rich indigenous Atayal culture, soothing natural hot springs, and breathtaking ecological landscapes. At the very heart of this charming district lies a beloved historical attraction. Securing your Wulai Scenic Train tickets is the perfect way to step back in time and immerse yourself in the region's fascinating heritage. Originally constructed during the Japanese colonial era, this railway was initially designed for transporting timber and heavy logging equipment down the steep mountainsides. However, as the logging industry waned and the allure of Wulai Waterfall began drawing curious travelers, the railway officially transitioned into a passenger transport service in 1963.
In its remarkable early days, the passenger carts were literally pushed along the tracks by local manpower! By 1974, to accommodate a rapidly growing influx of tourists, the entire system was motorized with diesel engines. Later, in 1987, a dedicated tunnel was carved out at the Waterfall Station to replace the old turntable system, streamlining the route and overcoming significant geographical challenges. Today, this 1.6-kilometer journey remains Taiwan's only surviving light railway of its kind. As you travel between Wulai Station—located just a short walk from the bustling Wulai Old Street—and the scenic Waterfall Station, you will be treated to sweeping, panoramic views of the turquoise Nanshi River gorge and the dense, verdant canopy of the surrounding subtropical forests. It is an incredibly relaxing and visually stunning experience that appeals to both history buffs and nature lovers alike.
